Skinny or Scandal?

Have you ever picked up a magazine and seen a big, tan, tall, handsome, muscly guy or a size 2 beautiful, intelligent, young woman or even a celebrity and wished that you were somewhat like them? Well stop because today what you thought was attractive is not as good as you think and the main question that we should be asking ourselves is ‘what message do models send?’ Here’s why…

Firstly, we need to consider the facts and the fact that during any photo shoot for any company the editors use photo shopping software to make people look like a barbie doll or a “normal person”. Also the editors choose to shave off features (e.g weight) to make people look skinnier, get rid of freckles and acne, and what looks like make-up to completely change the person/models in the photo. Plus what good comes of making 99% of people in the photo shoots to feel terrible and worthless because the editors take their job too far.

Now let’s get into the more negative side of things (where to start) I mean other than the fact that before photo shoots what was taken away in the photo the models actually thought that their body was alright and then seeing themselves edited causing even lower self-esteem to start even bigger problems (e.g bulimia, over-eating, under-eating/starving yourself, over working your body, and become obsessed with plastic surgery just to become an image that isn’t real well if you ask me I would say that it is shameful that we don’t have a big enough heart to show the true beauty of the world and if that wasn’t bad enough than just wait until you hear how bulling/cyber-bullying comes into this, so you see that pretty much everything about changing yourself to be something that you’re not is the biggest negative of all.

For me is disgusting and shouldn’t be tolerated but I feel disgusted that we as the people who are trying to make a difference just sit back and watch this happen to society but I cannot imagine how the people feel that have been changed to look like something that they are not and basically told that we are not good enough but if you think about it aren’t we being betrayed and lied to in the sense that the company just wants to make a name for themselves.

However, technology has taken a big step in modern society and can do some pretty incredible things in terms of editing, also when it comes to writing a paper or a magazine, or even a poster it has to attract a certain audience for any companies to get any recommendation or money at all. But in the sense of creativity, if creativity means destroying people’s images /personality just to make the company look better than these companies are going hard-core creative.

But let’s not forget that technology has made a massive impact on modern society. But by changing the appearance of someone BIG time companies are making it more effective so that company gets a lot of money. An example of attracting an audience is to make the edited picture of a pretty or “normal person” stand out so people buy that item.

To end with, the message that models send is a negative message and we shouldn’t believe everything that we see and not put ourselves down if we don’t look prettier or more handsome than a person who is being paid to look good may I add. There’s absolutely no point in beating ourselves up to try to look like an edited photo and change our self to look like something that’s not 100% real.

Misunderstanding Teens

Disclaimer:

So I feel as though teens are becoming more complicated these days and not many people understand what’s going on, I don’t even think the teenager knows what’s going on. Being myself I have seen many people to explain the things that are happening to my body, my moods, the feelings that I have and why i get these things even though I may not particularly want them. This of work I did at my first high school to explain things from a teens perspective and to put parents at ease. It’s never the parents fault, the parents are just confused on what’s happening to their teen/s and doesn’t know how to deal with it. I hope you enjoy and that it provides a slight understanding to teens.

Actual Task

“Have you ever looked at someone and thought what is going on inside their head? Have you ever wondered why teenagers are becoming more grown up and different than they used to be? Well it’s okay because today I am going to tell a bit of a story of teen years.

Good morning/afternoon,

Today I would like to explain a teenager’s life and assure you of any worries that you might have of course I am new to being a teenager but let’s hope my 2 years of experience is enough to help you find the answers that you are looking for. Let’s start off by saying that this speech is going to get personal but hear me out.

Firstly I would like to tell you some facts about teens, 1. If teens seem to be feeling; angry, depressed, sad, or out of the ordinary it’s because when you’re a teenager your hormones/emotions get just a bit complicated this is mostly caused by puberty. 2. Most teenagers are concerned about their looks of the bullying that goes on in schools and let’s just explore that topic for a moment shall we, for example have you ever noticed your teen coming home from school and is sad or angry, this could be because of bullying and it can happen at any age but teen years are the ones you might want to look out for. Bullying can also cause emotional and physical scaring for anyone and I can assure you that nobody in this world wants to feel worthless or ugly. 3. Family is a very important thing to a teen but they cannot live without their smartphones in fact the number of teens with smartphones has dramatically doubled over the past two years and now there are 94% of teens have a smartphone. So I have given you some facts but now I want to move onto my thoughts and feelings about the topic.

Ok, so my thoughts and feelings on teens is positive and negative, positive because you can’t really blame teens for most things that they do and that they like to prove that they are responsible and make their own decision they may not always make the right decisions but that’s what is good about being a parent or a teacher is that you get to teach your children until they are old enough to know how to deal with situations. To me parents/teachers are there to guide me, give me support, and catch me when I fall.

So far I have given you facts, thoughts, and feelings but let’s just say you are thinking how could I possibly know anything? Well there’s more that meets the eye now this is the personal part when I was in primary school I was made fun of, bullied, sometimes beaten up, called names, I had I think 4 true friends in the seven years that I was there for and I mean TRUE friends. I felt anger, fear, sad, nervous and above all disgust. when I was younger no one really liked me I was the last one picked for everything, I was the school punching bag and it’s hard to stay together and that’s how I am today I am defensive of myself because deep down I am more scared than anyone. It’s really affected me and to be honest I wanted to do things to myself and every time I just thought about how that would be in a teenagers head it would be much worse and no one wants this for their teen just tell me this, that moment when you hold your baby for the first time and you never knew that anything could so small, so delicate and you feel that tiny heartbeat and you know that you couldn’t love anything more in the whole world and you hope that you can do right by that baby and always be there to catch them when they fall and that nothing ever hurts them not a broken arm or a bad dream or a broken heart, tell me does that moment feel like just another memory in the ones that you have? Now imagine your baby that loves you and counts on you now that right there would be the best feeling in the world it really would be because you have given a chance to a person to see what life is like and yes kids and teens can cause trouble and say things that they don’t mean but that doesn’t mean that you are going to love your child any less or they won’t love you any less as long as you stick together and be there for one another.

Now I am going to tell you good things about being a teenager well there’s more independence/responsibility and more freedom to make your own decisions and do what you want with your life and then decide your future and what job you want to do, to have kids this is what not only adults decide but teens as well. As we all know people can be very creative especially teens because they feel as though no one understands their feelings so they express their feelings through very creative ways weather it’s art or song there are so many ways to express yourself other than talking and here are some more creative things about teens for starters they can do anything once they put their mind to it, and as they get older they take pride in their work, they become neat and colorful and filled with hope because that would be my favorite thing if I ever had kids that sparkle in their eye that sign of hope that keeps them going every day. But there are some downfalls to being a teenager as well like for one you can’t get away with a lot of things and you get responsibility and take that to be an excuse to do bad things and to let their egos take over and feel as though that they are always right but end in strife. Some teenagers don’t listen to parents even though that they went through the same thing when they were younger, although it is different when parents didn’t have technology, as many dramas, maybe the same egos, they didn’t have people that got away with things that easy.

So as you can see the rate of dramas caused by technology over the years have basically quadrupled by nearly 89% (depending on the era) and in summary ladies and gentlemen I would just like to say: In summary teen years can sometimes impress you and sometimes they don’t but in reality we are all human and we will make mistakes, it’s apart life and growing up. So let’s look at teen years as a story arch, baby and toddler is the intro/rising tension, the teen years is the climax and the adult/ grown up part that’s the lowering tension and conclusion so basically life is a big book that you need to write so tell me what will be the next chapter so  I hope you found the answers to your questions and just before I end this speech I would like to answer three simple questions:

  1. How are teenage years different to other stages in life?
  2. Well other stages in life are different because when you are a toddler you haven’t fully developed hormones and emotions yet and can’t fully understand drama so basically you are innocent and when you are past teenage years you must have learnt a lot because you want to make sure that it never happens again you know the drama all of that stuff but a good memory about teenage years is the friends you know people who relate to you and if you think about it friends are like second parents because you can count on them for support, help, and friendliness.
  1. What should adults/parents do to provide support that teens need?
  2. Well the best thing you can do is help anyway possible without making the matter worse so just be the shoulder they cry on, be the one that saves the day and be the one that puts a true smile on their face.
  1. How is the teenage experience today different to what adults/parents might have experienced?
  2. Think of it as if there was no technology, only books and think of it as if there were no dramas, not as big egos, and no popularity contests. I don’t know about you but i would take that life any day.

So now that I have shared this with you just think about what the next question is: what could be the next chapter?
